Leeds United have made their first move of the summer transfer window, confirming the signing of Harry Wilson on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Fulham.
The 29-year-old Wales international has signed a four-year deal at Elland Road, arriving with a proven top-flight pedigree. Wilson was Fulham's Player of the Season last term, scoring 11 goals and adding eight assists, and picked up the BBC's Goal of the Season award for his strike against Crystal Palace. Over five years at Craven Cottage he racked up 82 goal contributions in 187 appearances, helping the Cottagers to promotion and then keeping them established in the Premier League.
Leeds had been chasing Wilson for over a year. A deal was close to happening last summer before Fulham pulled out of the move in the final hours of the transfer window. This time, Wilson chose Leeds over several other offers, a clear vote of confidence in Daniel Farke's project at Elland Road.
Wilson gives Farke real versatility in the final third. He can operate as a wide forward cutting inside, or drop into a number 10 role, and he's known for dangerous set-piece delivery. It's exactly the right wing and attacking midfield blend Leeds were short of last season.
He's no stranger to Yorkshire either. Wilson spent time on loan at Hull City early in his career, where he scored seven goals in just 13 appearances and picked up the club's Player of the Month award. He also memorably knocked Leeds out of the Championship play-offs during a loan spell at Derby County, so there will be a few fans happy to see him finally end up on the right side of that rivalry.
At international level, Wilson made history as the youngest player ever to represent Wales, a record he took from Gareth Bale back in 2013. He now has 69 caps and 17 goals for his country, including a hat-trick against North Macedonia, and has played at both EURO 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
It's early days in the window, but Wilson's arrival is a serious statement of intent. Whether he's cutting in from the right or pulling strings behind the striker, he's exactly the kind of experienced, proven player this squad needed.
